Lately I’ve been so overwhelmed with everything happening in our lives that I decided to sign up for a 6 week Parent Resiliency course that our local Autism Center was offering.
I know. I know. I read that title myself and wondered,
“Hmm… so what does parent resiliency mean?”
In my mind I was thinking of the training exercises they do in the military with the guy struggling to crawl through the mud.
And I was likening that to being an autism parent and struggling just to make it another day. At least that’s how it feels some days to me. It also made me think of other words.
Like STRENGTH and DETERMINATION.

Defining Parent Resiliency
After attending the first class and not knowing what to expect – parent resiliency was defined as “the ability to cry about something and get back up after – to keep going.”
When I was asked why the heck I signed up for the class??
My only answer was because I was on burnout mode. Although I think I was really there to observe and hear how other parents were handling their family’s “craziness”.
Isn’t it a relief to know that you are not alone…
To come together in a group and share stories, support each other and offer compassion?
I want you to take a moment right now and think back over your life. What has been your best day ever? Close your eyes and just allow your mind to drift and bring to light that memory. Let yourself experience it all over again. The vibrant colors, the sounds, the people… where you were. Whatever. Make it personal.
Part of parent resiliency is not letting life get the best of us, but to keep our eyes deliberately focused on those better days. By keeping happy memories continually fresh in our minds it gives us the energy we need to bounce back. To use the ‘high’ times to help get us through the ‘low’ times. To persevere.
Even though every part of my being didn’t want to attend this class, I have found a group “a family” that cares and shares what has worked for them. I am looking forward to the next meeting. To getting out of my comfort zone and stretching a bit.
